#TSLA Q3 2026 earnings review: flat sales, a 2.6% operating margin, and the beat came from tariff refunds Revenue $28.0B, flat YoY, in line with the ~$28.1B consensus; non-GAAP EPS $0.48 against ~$0.45, GAAP EPS $0.22, −44%. The beat is a one-off: IEEPA tariff refunds added $526M to energy and $260M to automotive gross profit, less $339M passed to customers, net $447M. Without them gross profit is flat YoY, operating income is ~$0.3B instead of $718M and non-GAAP EPS roughly $0.37. Strengths • Automotive gross margin ex-credits 18.1% vs 15.4% a year ago on region and product mix; ~1.3pp of it is the tariff refund. • Services and other $4.6B, +33%, gross margin a record 15.9%; paid FSD 1.74M, +67%; over 75% of North American deliveries take paid FSD. • Free cash flow $1.5B after −$1.1B in Q2; cash and investments $45.4B against $9.3B of debt, nearly all non-recourse. • Production 464k, +4%; vehicle inventory down ~22k units to 11 days of supply; largest passenger-car backlog in four years. • Energy storage 13.7 GWh, +10%, record order rate and backlog; Megafactory Texas (50 GWh) started production; Megapack near sold out for 2027. • 2026 capex guide cut to >$20B from >$25B; $30B of new credit lines signed, undrawn. Weaknesses • Operating income $718M, −56%, margin 2.6% vs 5.8%; R&D +69% to $2.8B on Optimus, silicon and compute; stock comp $1.17B, +76%, on the 2025 CEO award. • Deliveries 486,532, −2%; automotive revenue −3%; regulatory credits $113M vs $417M; battery supply, not demand, capped volume. • Energy revenue $2.9B, −16%; the 33.1% energy margin includes the refunds and a vendor warranty reimbursement; ~24% ex-refunds. • Capex $4.7B, 2.1x YoY; $13.0B YTD, so Q4 is at least $7B; Terafab needs "tens of billions" through early 2028; no 2027 capex figure. • Related-party and mark-to-market noise: a $2.0B SpaceX stake (−$142M in Q3), $221M of Megapacks sold to SpaceX, a $288M bitcoin gain. • Robotaxi revenue "noticeable" only from Q2 2027; Optimus at 20k a week "at least a year" away; no comment on a SpaceX merger. Bottom line The car business is treading water at a 2.6% margin while R&D and the CEO award absorb the gross profit, and this quarter's beat was a tariff refund. Balance sheet, FSD attach and energy backlog are real; autonomy and robot revenue remain a 2027 promise. The question for Q4 is whether automotive margin holds near 17% without refunds, with credits gone and batteries short. #TSLA #earnings #Q3_2026 #Autos
